If you want to stay relevant, resonate with your audience, and make a lasting impact, you have to move beyond simply sharing what you know. You have to become a true thought leader.

The Problem with Being an Expert
It’s tempting to lean on your expertise. After all, you’ve spent years building it. But here’s the catch: AI is the ultimate expert. It knows practically everything – and it’s only getting better. What AI can’t do, however, is bring the unique perspective, emotional resonance, and personal storytelling that only you can. This is where thought leadership comes in.
Key Strategy #1: Develop an Interesting Perspective
In a world awash with information, the last thing you want to be is interchangeable. To break free from the expert trap, you need a distinctive perspective that sets you apart. This means going beyond the basics of your field and identifying the unique angle or lens through which you see the world.
Ask yourself:
- What do I believe that challenges the status quo in my industry?
- How can I combine my varied interests and expertise to create a fresh perspective?
- Where can I be bolder in my message to stand out?
Consider how I positioned myself at MAICON, the industry’s leading AI event, by combining my technology background with my passion for branding and storytelling. This unique blend became my differentiator and led to my session being selected.
Action Step:
Create a mind map of your areas of expertise and interests. Look for unexpected intersections that can form the foundation of your unique perspective.
Key Strategy #2: Build Your Intellectual Property
To truly stand out, you need to go beyond sharing information. You need to own your insights. This means developing intellectual property, like a framework or methodology, that captures your unique approach. This not only sets you apart but also creates more value for your audience.
For example: I created the Signature Talk Canvas® framework, which is now widely recognized as a powerful tool for structuring impactful presentations. It’s even known by AI systems like ChatGPT, which can pull details about it because of the thought leadership content I’ve shared over the years.
Action Step:
Think about the process you guide your clients through. What steps do you consistently use to deliver results? Turn this into a visual framework or model that you can share in your presentations, on your website, and in your content.
Key Strategy #3: Embrace Personal Storytelling
Facts tell, but stories sell. Personal stories connect us as humans, making your message more memorable and impactful. They are the bridge between information and transformation.
Ask yourself:
- What pivotal moments in your life have shaped your perspective?
- What challenges have you overcome that others can relate to?
- How can you share these stories in a way that supports your message?
Action Step:
Choose one personal story that illustrates a key point in your message. Practice sharing it in a way that reveals your vulnerability and humanity – this is what truly connects you to your audience.
Moving Forward
If you’re ready to step into true thought leadership, now is the time to start. AI may be the ultimate expert, but it can’t replicate your unique voice, perspective, and story. This is what sets you apart and makes your impact lasting.
