What kind of speaker are you? How would you describe your style?

I’ve always told our clients that we don’t want to fit you into some type of “speaker mold” that doesn’t feel natural to you.

Instead, I encourage you to take your natural speaking strengths and amplify them.

This also means adding to your speaking toolkit by taking some of the elements that other speaking styles have and making them your own.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this since we held our in-person client retreat speaking intensive a few months ago.

It was fun to see a variety of speaking styles of our clients as they practiced on stage and to realize that each one brought something different and also what they wanted to improve.

I’ve identified 4 speaker archetypes that I’m going to talk about in this episode, including what each has as their natural strengths along with areas to develop.

Find out your Speaker Archetype by taking our free quiz at https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/quiz/

You’ll discover where you shine as a speaker along with recommendations on what you can add to your speeches and presentations to make them even better.

How would you describe your speaking style? I’ve always told our clients that we don’t want to fit you into some type of speaker mold that doesn’t feel natural to you. Perhaps you have an idea of what a speaker is supposed to be like, especially a keynote speaker is supposed to be like. And what often happens is that you feel like you have to be someone that.

Carol Cox:
You’re.

Carol Cox:
Not. Instead, I encourage you to take your natural speaking strengths and amplify them. This does also mean adding to your speaking toolkit by taking some of the elements that other speaking styles have and making them your own. I’ve been thinking a lot about this since we held.

Knowing your archetype will help you to create more impactful and memorable presentations. Market yourself as a speaker, using your strengths, and to take the recommendations based on your archetype so that you can up.

Carol Cox:
Level your talks.

Carol Cox:
This will impact how audiences experience you as a speaker, how you can wow your audience and leave them wanting more for you, and how can you can leverage your natural abilities.

Carol Cox:
For greater success?

Carol Cox:
Let me give you the four speaker archetypes and then I’ll go into detail for each one.

Carol Cox:
Stellar scholar.

Carol Cox:
Fabulous facilitator, spellbinding.

Carol Cox:
Storyteller and provocative performer. Of course, they all have alliteration.

Carol Cox:
Because, you know, if you’ve been listening to this podcast.

Carol Cox:
For a.

Carol Cox:
While or if you’ve worked with us that we like alliteration, just makes it easier to.

Carol Cox:
Remember.

Carol Cox:
I want to go through now. Each of these.

Carol Cox:
Four.

Carol Cox:
Highlight the strengths for each and the recommendations for.

Carol Cox:
Where to add additional.

Carol Cox:
Elements. If you want to figure out which of the four speaker archetypes you are. You can guess from listening to the.

Carol Cox:
My.

Carol Cox:
Descriptions. But really, if you want to make sure that you’re getting not only.

Carol Cox:
Your result, but also.

Carol Cox:
The recommendations and the podcast playlist that you’ll get for depending on which result that you get, go take the quiz as speaking your.

Carol Cox:
Brand quiz. Let me start with the stellar scholar.

Carol Cox:
Many of our clients come to us because they are the stellar scholar. We can also call them the expert.

Carol Cox:
Presenter This is where I’ve talked.

Carol Cox:
About we need to get out of.

Carol Cox:
The expert trap. We are experts in what.

Carol Cox:
We do in our businesses, with our clients. But when it comes to being speakers, especially keynote speakers, being.

Carol Cox:
An expert presenter is no.

Carol Cox:
Longer where we need to be. We need to shift into this idea.

Carol Cox:
Of thought leadership. As a stellar scholar.

Carol Cox:
Your presentations.

Carol Cox:
Are.

Carol Cox:
Value packed with insights and expertise. You really enjoy digging into the details and you have creating presentations down to in science. You’ve probably been doing.

Carol Cox:
It for a while and you have your.

Carol Cox:
Slide deck, your your go to slides, maybe you’ll add a few, you’ll rearrange them. But you.

Carol Cox:
Know what you’re going to.

Carol Cox:
Present when you go especially to say conferences. And when I say you have creating presentations down to a science that even could be.

Carol Cox:
Literal.

Carol Cox:
We have a good subset of clients who are in the STEM field, so they are physicians, pharmacists, scientists.

Carol Cox:
Engineers and so on.

Carol Cox:
And you probably fit into this.

Carol Cox:
Scholar speaking archetype.

Carol Cox:
And with this archetype you have drive and ambition and you’re always looking to improve and.

Carol Cox:
Master something.

Carol Cox:
New because you’re analytical and logical. You’re really good at identifying connections and.

Carol Cox:
Patterns.

Carol Cox:
And finding solutions to even difficult problems. And you make things happen. You are a great action taker and implementer because you do enjoy the sense of mastery and becoming excellent at.

Carol Cox:
What you’re doing.

Carol Cox:
All of that is fantastic. Your audiences.

Carol Cox:
Derive a lot.

Carol Cox:
Of value from your insights and your.

Carol Cox:
Expertise.

Carol Cox:
Your big challenge is that sometimes you might be a bit too technical and tactical in your presentations by sticking only to the facts or sticking only.

Carol Cox:
To the lessons, or sticking.

Carol Cox:
Only to the tangible takeaways for your audience. So what I recommend is incorporating more.

Carol Cox:
Personal.

Carol Cox:
Stories and.

Carol Cox:
Performance aspects.

Carol Cox:
Into your speaking so that you can connect with your audience in a deeper way and make your talks even more impactful and memorable. This is how you make the shift.

Carol Cox:
From expert presenter to thought leader. You may wonder, Well.

Carol Cox:
What are.

Carol Cox:
My personal stories.

Carol Cox:
Have to do with what I’m sharing with my audience? I do need to.

Carol Cox:
Share data.

Carol Cox:
And I do need.

Carol Cox:
To share these facts.

Carol Cox:
And these takeaways with my audience. And yes, you can still do that, but your.

Carol Cox:
Personal stories, your journey.

Carol Cox:
Of discovery, is going to make.

Carol Cox:
Your talks much more.

Carol Cox:
Impactful than just sticking to the.

Carol Cox:
Quote unquote, facts on their own.

Carol Cox:
This is why TEDTalks became so popular is because, yes, they had factual information in them and they may have been based on the speaker’s.

Carol Cox:
Research.

Carol Cox:
But they very much incorporated that speaker’s.

Carol Cox:
Personal journey of discovery into the talk.

Carol Cox:
So that’s the stellar scholar.

Carol Cox:
Let’s go to.

Carol Cox:
Archetype number two, the fabulous facilitator. As a fabulous facilitator, you’re a great teacher.

Carol Cox:
And listener and you’re really good.

Carol Cox:
At helping people understand concepts.

Carol Cox:
And learn from each other.

Carol Cox:
You mostly enjoy speaking to smaller groups.

Carol Cox:
In a.

Carol Cox:
Workshop setting where you can encourage participation and dialogue. Your empathetic.

Carol Cox:
Nature.

Carol Cox:
Allows you to identify connections among people rather than you being the provider of the solutions. You like to help people find the solutions.

Carol Cox:
Together.

Carol Cox:
As a facilitator.

Carol Cox:
Your natural.

Carol Cox:
Strengths and even your developed strengths in this area are very much appreciated when you go do workshops and trainings. However, if you want to make this shift from.

Carol Cox:
Expert presenter, expert trainer to thought leader.

Carol Cox:
Here are some things that you can think about doing. Your big challenge could be that you’re in so inclined to give the.

Carol Cox:
Floor to others.

Carol Cox:
That your audience misses out on the opportunity to.

Carol Cox:
Learn more about you and to learn more about your own personal stories and personal experiences.

Carol Cox:
So similar to.

Carol Cox:
The stellar scholar, you.

Carol Cox:
Would benefit from sharing.

Carol Cox:
More personal.

Carol Cox:
Stories in your content. And this could be training content, not just keynote speaking content, but training content as well. We have many of our clients that we work with who do paid trainings for companies and organizations, and we encourage them to put some personal stories into their training content and they are pleasantly.

Carol Cox:
Surprised by how well it goes over.

Carol Cox:
The other thing you can do as a fabulous facilitator is to.

Carol Cox:
Add more of your personal lessons, learn so you have the personal.

Carol Cox:
Stories, but also your own insights. Because you’re a facilitator.

Carol Cox:
You’re.

Carol Cox:
So good at giving that floor to your audience. Your audience may miss out on learning from you directly. So what are those, some of those hard won lessons that you can share with your audience and that’s going to make your presentations and trainings even more impactful and transformational.

Carol Cox:
The third.

Carol Cox:
Archetype is a spellbinding.

Carol Cox:
Storyteller with the first two that I just went through, the stellar scholar and the.

Carol Cox:
Fabulous facilitator. I recommend for them to add.

Carol Cox:
More storytelling into their presentations and talks.

Carol Cox:
As a spellbinding.

Carol Cox:
Storyteller. You have that down.

Carol Cox:
Your audience is captivated by your stories and they feel a real connection to you. You understand.

Carol Cox:
The power of sharing personal.

Carol Cox:
Stories and being.

Carol Cox:
Vulnerable is how you’ve learned to better understand yourself.

Carol Cox:
You see what’s happened to you as a way to share those life lessons and to help your audience realize.

Carol Cox:
They’re not alone.

Carol Cox:
Your big challenge is that you love sharing stories so much that you may miss out.

Carol Cox:
On the.

Carol Cox:
Opportunity to provide your audience.

Carol Cox:
With your overall thought, leadership.

Carol Cox:
Message and a.

Carol Cox:
Strong call to action.

Carol Cox:
My recommendation is to share your bigger why of what matters to you and the impact you want to make on a bigger scale. This is your.

Carol Cox:
Opportunity.

Carol Cox:
To.

Carol Cox:
Universalize your personal.

Carol Cox:
Story and connect it to your big idea.

Carol Cox:
The Fourth.

Carol Cox:
Archetype is the provocative performer. You are outgoing and charismatic and you love.

Carol Cox:
To put on a show.

Carol Cox:
The bigger the stage.

Carol Cox:
The better your entertainer at heart.

Carol Cox:
And you love to incorporate acting, comedy, dancing, singing, props and multimedia into your speeches and presentations. Or if you haven’t yet, you may have wanted to, but you haven’t been sure if it’s appropriate to do so. And I say absolutely it is. Your big challenge, though, is that you love performing so much that you may miss out on the opportunity to provide your audience with.

Carol Cox:
Your overall thought leadership.

Carol Cox:
Message and a.

Carol Cox:
Strong call to action.

Carol Cox:
So similar to the fabulous.

Carol Cox:
Facilitator.

Carol Cox:
Think about sharing your bigger why of what matters to you and the impact you want to make on a bigger scale. And then use your talents to make your message memorable and.

Carol Cox:
Actionable through your natural performing.

Carol Cox:
Abilities. Of these four archetypes that I.

Carol Cox:
Just shared, this Delta scholar.

Carol Cox:
Fabulous.

Carol Cox:
Facilitator, spellbinding.

Carol Cox:
Storyteller.

Carol Cox:
And provocative performer.

Carol Cox:
Do you have a sense of.

Carol Cox:
Which of the four you are.

Carol Cox:
Now? You may be wondering if you’re a bit of both, or maybe you are not sure. Say in some settings or one.

Carol Cox:
In other settings you’re another.

Carol Cox:
That is possible. However, I will say that you most likely gravitate to one of these four naturally.

Carol Cox:
As far as.

Carol Cox:
Which one do you feel the most comfortable in? Which is your go to style? And if you take our quiz, then you’re going to to know.

Carol Cox:
Which of the four results.

Carol Cox:
That you get. And when you do that, you’ll also going to get more recommendations and a hand-selected podcast playlist of episodes from the speaking, your brand podcast for you to listen to, to maximise your strengths and for these areas to add to, to improve your presentations and make them that much more impactful and memorable. Again, to take the quiz and it’s entirely free, go to speak in your brand slash quiz again as Speaking Your Brand slash quiz. Now you may be wondering which of these archetypes I am. Which one do I identify the most with? And I would say that.

Carol Cox:
For the majority.

Carol Cox:
Of my adult career, I have been the.

Carol Cox:
Stellar scholar.

Carol Cox:
I like information. I definitely have putting.

Carol Cox:
Presentations together.

Carol Cox:
Down to a science, and I love getting into the details and the insights. However, if I look back to when I was young, say elementary school, middle school, high school age, I really had.

Carol Cox:
A lot more of those performance aspects.

Carol Cox:
Than that. I completely abandon or just even think about when I got into speaking, because when I got into speaking first it was in the technology space and then more in the business of marketing space. And I just didn’t think about.

Carol Cox:
Incorporating performance aspects.

Carol Cox:
But now I see how impactful that is and just how much more fun it is for me as a speaker and for the audience, and.

Carol Cox:
How much more that what they’re learning.

Carol Cox:
Really sticks by integrating some of these performance aspects into it. So it may be the case for you. The speaking style you have now as an adult in your career may be a certain way, but if you think back to when you were younger, maybe some of the things that you naturally did, you may find that one of the other speaking styles is one that you can definitely work on developing and add to your current speaking style. Again, not to be someone that you’re not, but really to amplify it once you take the quiz. I would love to know which speaker archetype you are. You can reply to the email that you’ll.

Carol Cox:
Get after you get your result, or.

Carol Cox:
You can email me Carol Cox as Speaking Your Brand dot.

Carol Cox:

Carol Cox:
Until next time. Thanks for listening.
